Is my child safe in a cybersecurity class?

What students actually do in a school cybersecurity program, the safety rules that apply, and why defensive skills matter.

4 min read

Some parents worry that a cybersecurity class teaches “hacking”. Our program teaches the opposite: how defenders protect people, accounts and systems.

What students actually do

  • Spot phishing clues in practice emails.
  • Learn how passwords, multi-factor sign-in and networks work.
  • Practise basic computer commands in a safe practice environment.
  • Solve team puzzle challenges (capture-the-flag) designed for students.

The safety rules

  • All labs run in approved, sandboxed practice environments.
  • Students never attack real systems, scan public websites or use real passwords.
  • Exercises use made-up data.
  • Students sign and revisit a responsible-use agreement.

Why it matters

Every student will meet scams and data risks in their life. Older students also discover real careers — security analyst, cloud security, incident responder — that are in demand.
