Robotics for young kids: more than playing with bricks

What children really learn when they build and code robots — and how to start at home with no kit at all.

4 min read

When children build a robot and make it move, they are practising engineering and coding at the same time — usually without noticing, because it feels like play.

What they are really learning

  • Sequencing: putting steps in the right order.
  • Debugging: finding which step went wrong and fixing it.
  • Engineering: making a design stronger, faster or more accurate.
  • Teamwork: sharing parts, ideas and turns.

From picture blocks to Python

Young children code with picture blocks that snap together. As they grow, the same ideas — loops, decisions, sensors — move into Python, the language used by real engineers.

Start at home with no kit

Print the Robot Steps unplugged game: one person is the robot, the other writes arrow steps to reach a treasure. Then try the Robot Steps mission on screen.
