Robot Builders
Motors, sensors and block coding: robots that move, react and solve small challenges.
- Grades
- Grades 3–5
- Length
- 8–10 sessions
- Group size
- 16–24 students, working in teams of 2–3 per kit
- Where it runs
- School-day enrichment, After-school, Weekend academy, Summer camp, Library / community center
Kids build robots with motors and sensors and use block coding to make them drive, stop and react.
Skills students build
Before joining
None. Build & Move (K–2) is helpful but not needed.
How progress is checked
- Challenge runs (drive a square, stop before a wall)
- Engineering notebook
- Obstacle-course team challenge
What students learn, step by step
Every lesson ends with something students make, explain or show.
| Session | Topic | What students learn | What students produce |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Meet the robot kit | Hub, motors, sensors, safe building | Kit check and first build |
| 2 | Move with code | Block coding: forward, turn, wait | Robot drives a square |
| 3 | Loops | Repeat blocks | Shorter program, same path |
| 4 | Sensing the world | Distance and color sensors | Robot stops before a wall |
| 5 | If this, then that | Decisions in code | Robot reacts to colors |
| 6 | Gears and speed | Gear ratios, fast vs strong | Test results in notebook |
| 7 | Team challenge | Plan, build, test, improve | Obstacle-course run |
| 8 | Robot showcase | Demo and explain | Family showcase |

More from Robotics
What students build
- A robot that drives a planned path
- A sensor robot that stops or turns by itself
- An obstacle-course solution
How we keep it safe
- Small parts are used only with age-appropriate kits and adult supervision
- Kits stay at the school or site — nothing to buy for home
- No accounts or personal data needed for the coding apps used in class
- Clear tidy-up and kit-check routines at the end of every session
The engineering design cycle
Every challenge follows the same loop real engineers use.
- 1
Ask
What problem are we solving?
- 2
Plan
Sketch and choose an idea.
- 3
Build
Put the robot together.
- 4
Code & test
Run it and measure what happens.
- 5
Improve
Change one thing and try again.
More Robotics tracks
Students can move up to the next grade band in later years.
Build & Move
Big-brick builds, gears and a first motor — plus picture-block coding to make things move.
Robotics Engineers
Engineering design with motors and sensors, coded with blocks then early Python, ending in a team mission challenge.
Robotics with Python
Python-controlled robots, sensor data, smoother control and a competition-style capstone built in teams.
